Departure

I had hoped I was mistaken,
On the day you never came.
As I waited in that terminal,
Passing people looked the same.

Every one of them was almost…
But not the one I waited for,
I thought I saw your face a hundred times,
In the reflections on the floor.

I thought I heard your voice,
Falling from a stranger’s lips,
When you said that you weren’t coming,
I still watched, in case you did.

For the way you wear your hair,
The smile in your eyes,
As they called the final boarding,
I felt my last hope die.

I walked down that lonely jetway,
I never looked back for what’s gone,
‘Cause I knew you wouldn’t be there…
Still I wish I had been wrong.
